The forthcoming changes in the energy labeling of space heaters (e.g. boilers) was discussed recently all over Europe. Unfortunately the proposed changes are not easy to understand. The changes, which come into effect on 26th September 2019, are included in the delegated regulation EU 811/2013 (new heating appliances / -systems) and have been agreed by the EU. The regulation says, that a revised energy label is required for the main heater (e.g. a boiler).

From 26 September 2019, a modified energy label will be used, which will then range from A +++ to D. The current range is from A ++ to G. A heater that previously had Class A will continue to hold it, but the color of the Class A scale will change from green to yellow.

Labeling EU

Since new heaters often are sold with temperature-control devices and with drinkable water-heaters, the labeling is done for the whole system with a separate label, which is called the “composite equipment label”. Since its introduction in 2015 this label has been classified in the range A +++ to G. Here the class A is always yellow and it remains so even after the 26th September 2019. The requirements for the awarding of classes for inter-connected systems remain the same. This means that systems that are currently sold with class A will continue to receive this classification.
